What is the GM Foundation?
It is a charitable organization, begun in 1976, that has “donated hundreds of millions of dollars to deserving charities, educational organizations and disaster relief efforts worldwide,” according to the organization’s website.
The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is a scholarship which the Foundation offers that helps students who wouldn’t otherwise have the financial means to attend college and obtain a four-year degree. According to guidelines laid out by the Foundation, GM seeks to reward students who’ve attained flying colors both inside and outside the classroom. That means that not only do students have to exhibit good grades, they must also show they’ve participated in extracurricular activities. Speaking to the students directly, Buick said it’s a “reward for what you’ve made of yourself and the difference you are making for others.”
More specifically, the rewards grants 50 first-time freshmen and existing college students $25,000 a year to help them as they pursue auto industry-related degrees. We at Crawford Buick GMC encourage all interested parties to apply here.
U.S. News & World Report has reported that jobs in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields will grow 17 percent by 2018. These jobs are vital to the automotive industry, so students pursuing degrees in STEM fields were an easy choice as recipients for the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program.
Funded by the GM Foundation, Buick was able to award $4.2 million in scholarships to 1,100 deserving recipients this year.
“Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, the GM Foundation is able to make a significant investment in the next generation of our country’s leaders and innovators,” said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard, in a press release. “We have witnessed firsthand how this scholarship is changing lives by making education more accessible and affordable.”
Of the 1,100 recipients, 521 are the first in their family to pursue higher education, 48 are from military families and 45 have served in the U.S. Armed Forces themselves.
Since its inception in 2011, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program has awarded roughly $16.5 million to around 3,300 students.
