With a new Buick or GMC model, it’s easier than ever to explore the Las Cruces area. Our extensive location page on the area has some interesting facts about the history of the city, as well as things to do. This post is about some of the many places to visit in the area, many of which can turn into mini road trips—a perfect excuse to drive a new car.
Things to do in Las Cruces are wide ranging. For the best hiking in New Mexico, make a day trip to the Soledad Canyon. This area is rife with scenic views, wildlife, flora, and more. Winding trails weave across canyons, and natural rock formations and stalactites are everywhere. You can also see the remains of indigenous and settler buildings. Rocky terrain can be treacherous in some cars, but not one of the many Buick or GMC crossovers and SUVs.
Stop by the many water tank murals in the area. This is a great activity if you’re bored and looking for something to do. You can see how local artists transform murals into stunning roadside attractions, many of which show pride in the local cities and cultures. Driving from mural to mural is also a great way to experience the city and the open road.
Finally, everyone can enjoy Art Obscura. Considered a landmark by the locals, you can see bizarre and fascinating antiques, as well as some interesting objects and technologies. This quirky gallery has many pieces for sale, but the fun lies in browsing some of the truly unique collections in the store.
The United States Border Patrol is taking part in a 90-day testing period for body cameras in areas including Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Michigan, and Washington. The testing period comes after a long list of complaints about use of force against illegal immigrants.
“The Border Patrol anticipates the use of this equipment will also allow our community members to have more insight as to what our agents do on a daily basis and what challenges they face,” the US Customs and Border Protection agency told ABC-7.
After the test, the agency plans to analyze legal, privacy, and policy issues that arise. The cameras work for around four to six hours and can be worn on the head or chest. After an initial review of cases involving force and misconduct by agents and inspectors since 2009, new internal affairs head Mark Morgan found 155 that merited further investigations.
Vicki Gaueca, director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico Regional Center for Border Rights welcomes the use of body cameras. “[The cameras] will help protect abuse victims, and if used appropriately these cameras will help ensure that CBP’s interaction with community members is fair and lawful.”
We at Crawford Buick GMC hope this approach will make law enforcement safer and fairer for everyone.
