Steps to Buying a Truck: What Do You Need to Know First?

2017 GMC Sierra - El Paso, TX

Are you curious about buying a truck? We’ve put together a list of the various steps to the process, from finding the pickup that’s right for you to purchasing. Naturally, the car-buying process various from person to person; however, there are some important steps to buying a truck to keep in mind when shopping around.

First, according to Edmunds, it’s important to budget accordingly. The average car sells for roughly $25,000. However, the average truck sells for about $45,000. Trucks are larger, with added capabilities, components, and technologies—one reason they can be more expensive. Budgeting will help you find a truck that’s within your price range as well as practical.

Next, you’ll have to choose between light-duty, medium-duty, or heavy-duty. These are the three basic criteria of production trucks on the market, and most are divided into categories like 1500, 2500, and 3500. There’s a trade-off between fuel economy and towing capacity, so it’s important to know what you plan on using your truck for. If you need it for hauling heavy loads for work, consider a heavy-duty truck. If you simply want a truck to have the option to tow and haul every once in a while, a light-duty truck might be right for you.

Finally, find the right bed and cab size. This also gets back to use—do you need a truck for carrying people, payloads, or both? Extended cabs are great for fitting people, but they can be more expensive. Meanwhile, short beds often improve fuel economy and handling, though they limit what you can carry.

GMC Adds All-New Duramax Diesel Engine Option to Canyon’s Offerings

2015 GMC Canyon

After re-entering the mid-size truck segment last year, the 2016 GMC Canyon is shaking up the competition once again, adding an all-new Duramax diesel engine to its list of available powertrains. The turbo-diesel engine makes no apologies as it raises the standard for the segment.

Rated at 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the engine provides a trailering capacity of up to 7,700 lbs for two-wheel drive models. In addition to its incredible hauling capabilities, the new 2.8-liter engine is expected to provide impressive fuel efficiency as well.

Along with the game-changing diesel engine, the 2016 Canyon will also offer an all-new integrated trailer brake controller and smart diesel exhaust brake system. The engine is paired to a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

“A diesel engine was part of the Canyon’s portfolio plan from the beginning, meaning the chassis, suspension and other elements of its architecture were engineered to support it,” said Scott Yackley, who served as assistant chief engineer. “That means there are no compromises with the Canyon diesel. It offers exceptional capability delivered with a confident feeling of control.”

Mark your calendars: the 2016 GMC Canyon with the available Duramax diesel engine is set to arrive this fall.

GM Introduces 2015 GMC Sierra HD

2015 Sierra HD Last month, General Motors gave us a peak at the all-new 2015 GMC Sierra HD. These new heavy-duty trucks will be available early next year and include the 2500HD, 3500HD, and the luxurious Denali HD. These trucks offer many class-leading features.

Helping you get the job done is the highest payload capacity available in the segment: 7,374 pounds. This is paired with the highest conventional trailering rating of 19,600 pounds and fifth-wheel trailering capabilities of 23,200 pounds.

The GMC HD trucks are available with gasoline or Duramax diesel engines and a bi-fuel option that combines a compressed natural gas system with a gasoline engine.

Just because your truck is heavy-duty, that doesn’t mean you don’t want to be comfortable. Inside, you’ll find high-tech features and a comfortable interior. GM used larger rear doors and a revised cab body style to make it easier to get in and out of the truck. The back seat also gets 2 more inches of legroom.

Controls are easy-to-reach from the driver’s seat and located where you would expect. There are also more storage compartments and more outlets and plug-ins for your electronic devices. This is all in addition to the GMC IntelliLink infotainment system that comes with an 8-inch color touch screen.

For others who are unfamiliar with this term, you may not know the benefits torque can bring to your vehicle. Sierra 1500 Proves Its Strength In a Demanding New TV Spot

Sure, with several decades of brawn and strength backing it up, you’ve come to expect a lot from the GMC Sierra pickup. But just how strong is the 2013 Sierra 1500’s steel frame? In a new TV spot, Sierra was put to the test as four mooring winches pulled the truck in all directions a total of 46 times. After withstanding such abuse, the 2013 Sierra Denali used for the spot drove away unscathed.

“We considered countless tasks and conditions where our trucks would head to work when developing the Sierra’s frame, but to be honest, this challenge caught us by surprise,” said Rick Jayroe, engineering group manager for chassis structure and body mounts. “Not only would this test the four mounting points, but only a very strong frame will stay perfectly straight hanging in the air with the weight of the body, powertrain and interior components on it. The Sierra handled it with ease.”
