Safety Tips for Teenage Drivers

Teenage driversIt might surprise you to learn that the deaths of 16- and 17-year-old drivers rose 19% in the first six months of 2012 compared to the first six months of 2011. The Governors Highway Traffic Safety Association found that 25 states reported an increased in 16- and 17-year old driver deaths. The fact is teenage drivers account for more auto accidents than any other age group. We’ve compiled a few safety tips below to help teenage drivers stay alert behind the wheel and hopefully keep these statistics down:

1)      Keep your cell phone out of reach while driving.

–          Several studies indicate that using a cell phone while driving is equivalent to driving drunk. Both talking and texting on cell phones distracts you from focusing on the road ahead and you may miss key developments that could create hazards for you.

2)      Be mindful of the speed limit and obey it.

–          Did you know that 40% of all fatal teen accidents are caused by speeding? That’s a number that can easily be brought down. The recommended speeds are posted for a reason. Follow them.

3)      Be a defensive driver.

–          Be aware of traffic that is in front of you, next to you, and behind you. Always stay at least a car length behind the car in front of you.

4)      Skip the carpool lane and drive solo.

–          While it may be fun to pile up a few friends in your car and head to school or weekend activities, having even a single teen passenger in your car can double the risk of causing a car accident. Add in a few more teen passengers and the risk continues to escalate.

5)      Start by driving a safe car.

–          Choose a car with the latest safety technology and excellent crash test ratings. We can help with that!
