Spring Car Prep
Winter’s over, but don’t rest easy just yet. Here are a few pointers on what you should definitely be doing for spring car prep.

Winter’s over, but don’t rest easy just yet. Here are a few pointers on what you should be doing for spring car prep.

Clean Everything – Including the Undercarriage

During the winter months, vehicles have a tendency to accumulate road salt, which can be really harsh on the mechanical aspects of your car. So wash on, in, and underneath your vehicle, and get all the trash out of the cabin, too.

Mind Your Tires

Cold temperatures are rough on tire pressure. Make sure everything’s filled according to manufacturer recommendations and get your tires rotated.

Replace Filters and Wipers

Oil and oil filter should be one of the first things replaced after winter, but the air filter should be replaced, too (it can affect your mileage by up to 10 mpg!). If your wipers are getting streaky, throw in a new pair, too.

Check the Battery

Low temperatures equal lower battery capacity, so have your battery system checked out.

Flush Your Cooling System

It’s recommended that you flush your cooling system every two years, so if you’ve done this recently, you’re fine; if you haven’t, prevent engine failure by cleaning out any rust and sediment.

Beat the Heat: Tips for Remembering Kids and Pets in the Car

car seatWe’ve all probably seen it on the news–a frenzied parent out of his/her routine who accidentally leaves a child in a hot vehicle.

Recently, one Boston dad left his one-year-old daughter in the car at the train station. “The baby had fallen asleep in the child seat and I went into auto pilot. I had what I thought was a safe-guard procedure against this in place…” said the dad. Thankfully, the father remembered while on the train and the baby was safely retrieved.

However, according to USA Today, an average of 38 infants die in hot cars each year. So, to help any out-of-routine parents out there, we’ve compiled a list of tips for remembering kids, and even pets, in a hot car.

  1. dog in mirrorUtilize technology. Smartphone apps such as Precious Cargo ask if you have kids, pets, or even perishable groceries when you start your car. When you turn your car off, the app then sends you an alert.
  2. Put a cell phone, wallet, or purse in the rear seats with your child to increase your chances of checking the backseat before you leave.
  3. Put something in the front seat, like a stuffed animal, to remind you to check the backseat. You can also put a Post It note on your steering wheel or somewhere on your dash reminding you to check the back.

Life happens, so be sure to have a safeguard plan in place for any situation involving young children. Be sure to also come visit us at Crawford Buick GMC for our newest lineup of cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs.

Celebrate National Pet Travel Safety Day with These Tips

National Pet Travel Safety DayWhether you celebrated or not, National Pet Travel Safety Day was on January 2nd. In order to commemorate this event, we at Crawford Buick GMC have assembled some suggestions to keep in mind when driving with a pet.

According to the NPTSD, founded by pet advocate and lifestyle expert Colleen Paige, the most important thing to keep in mind when travelling with a pet is to keep them secure. Not only will this keep them at rest if they get nervous, but it will also protect them in the event of an accident.

“As a former paramedic in busy Southern California, I responded to many an accident caused by driver distraction due to pets in the vehicle,” said Paige. “It’s very sad when a dog or cat never even makes it home to their new life because they didn’t survive the accident…[sometimes] all of the tragedy could have been prevented with a single dog harness.”

Some other tips are to always carry treats and water with you. Remember to reward your pet for good behavior and keep them hydrated. It’s also important to pull over frequently and give your pets a break.

Last but not least, remember to have fun and make memories when travelling with your furry companion.

  1. Up Your Food Game

A successful tailgate requires awesome food. Grill up some burgers and hot dogs, along with vegetarian options. Have a wide range of tailgating foods available so everyone has a variety they enjoy.

  1. Dress Like A Pro Tailgater

Don’t forget to look the part while playing corn hole! Wear your team colors or your favorite player’s jersey. No matter what, make sure you are enjoying yourself and you are dressed for the weather, warm or cold.

  1. Have a Portable TV and Radio

A portable TV allows you to enjoy both the pre-game and the game. Want to have some music but don’t have a cordless radio? You can use your car radio while having your open trunk double as additional seating or a food/drink station.
