Tips for Winter Travels

Winter DrivingMany people take winter vacations just as they do summer vacations. Whether you are leaving a cold state for a warm one, or trying to find the snow that didn’t make it to your home, you are bound to run into some type of winter driving conditions. Cold temperatures, falling snow, and icy roadways can lead to some pretty hazardous driving conditions. Before you head out for your winter travels, we suggest the following tips to help make your winter trip a safer one.

  • Make frequent stops if you are driving long distances. Get out of your car and stretch for a few minutes about every hour or so. Winter driving is much more fatiguing than cruising in the summer.
  • Pack hearty snacks. Colder weather means your body needs more nourishment than it does on a hot summer day. High-energy foods and water should be packed for any trip that in normal driving conditions would take a few hours as you’ll more than likely tack on more time than normal for winter driving.
  • Pack a winter travel kit. Pack extra blankets, gloves, hats, a good flashlight with extra batteries, and an ice scraper just in case you find yourself needing them.
  • Ensure that your gas tank is always at least half full. Gas can freeze just like any other liquid and you don’t want to be left stranded.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated before you begin traveling. You don’t want to find yourself needing to change a tire of the side of a cold and snowy highway shoulder.

Don’t risk your safety to get to your destination. If they roads are very bad, stay home and reschedule your trip for another time if possible.
